Multi-awarded dramaturge, director-playwright, music composer-arranger, and scholar has produced over fifty productions drawing acclamation across the world and the Philippines. Fernandez has produced works that span over four decades –anthologized, published, and widely acknowledged.
His established methods in performance mark innovative processes in production, now recognized in Philippine dramaturgy. These are essayed in six books including numerous papers published in national and international journals.
Transcreation and Distillation, Performance Principles he has developed, have been widely acknowledged in dance and performance pedagogy, also published in numerous articles, essays, and books.
His “Ramayana” drew raves in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangkok, and Singapore, one of over 50 full-feature productions acclaimed in many cities in Europe, the US Mainland, Pacific, and Asia through the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG).
He founded the IPAG and the pioneering MSU-IIT Culture and Arts Studies Program, corollary to his being Visiting Professor and Culture-Performance Studies specialist here and abroad.
(The 48-year-old IPAG is recognized as the Philippines’ most-traveled and -awarded performing company having performed to thousands in over a hundred festivals and cities worldwide.)
Listed in the Cambridge International Biographic Centre’s 2001 edition of Who’s Who in the World (1st ed), the 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century (1st ed), he is also featured as “Defender of our Heritage” in Fookien Times’ Philippine Yearbook, and the first and latest editions of the Philippine Encyclopedia of the Arts published by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
As Visiting Professor and Culture-Performance Studies specialist, he lectures in Philippine universities and abroad, keynoting various national and international conferences. He has lectured in Sharjah, Shanghai, Bangkok, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh, Yogyakarta, and Taipei, and has been awarded Fellowships to Sweden, Japan, and the U.S. (He trained in Theatre Anthropology under Eugenio Barba.)
He won the Palanca twice, CCP Gantimpala, and was conferred the CCP Gador, CCP Pilak, Fr. Francisco Demetrio, SM Global Pinoy, and, most recently, the International Theatre Institute’s Lampara Para sa Sining at Kultura, and the APOFIL Spain Excellence Awards.
The Writers Union of the Philippines (UMPIL) presented him with the Francisco Balagtas Award in both English and Filipino, preceding the Gawad Pedro Bucaneg, which was conferred to the IPAG.
The CCP conferred the IPAG with the highest distinction in the 2020 Gawad CCP para sa Sining.
